Why It Happens
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint and help you move your arm. Tears happen more often in people over 40, whose tendons naturally weaken with age, in athletes doing repetitive overhead motions, and in manual laborers doing repeated heavy lifting.
Tears range from partial, where the tendon is damaged but still functioning to some degree, to full, where the tendon is completely severed from the bone. The right treatment approach depends heavily on which type you have, which is why an accurate evaluation matters before deciding on a plan.
The Honest Truth
Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.
How We Fix It
Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what the four phases look like for a rotator cuff tear.
Weeks 1–2
Pain
Hands-on techniques and activity modification reduce pain and protect the shoulder from further irritation.
Weeks 2–6
Prime
Guided mobility work addresses stiffness without stressing the healing tendon.
Weeks 6–10
Perform
Progressive strengthening of the rotator cuff and surrounding muscles restores stability to the joint.
Weeks 10+
Prevent
Overhead reaching and lifting get tested under real load before you're cleared to use your shoulder freely again.

Questions, Answered
No. Many partial tears, and some full tears depending on age and activity level, respond well to physical therapy alone. We'll help you understand which category your injury falls into.
Non-surgical rehab often runs 6 to 12 weeks. If surgery is needed, post-surgical rehab typically takes several months following your surgeon's specific protocol.
It depends on the severity. We'll help you understand which movements are safe and which to avoid while your plan addresses the underlying tear.
